POLIMI is the 1st scientific-technological university in Italy and 142nd worldwide according to the QS World University Rankings 2022 (13th university in the world and 7th in Europe for Engineering & Technology; 5th university in the world and 3rd in Europe for Art & Design; 10th university in the world and 5th in Europe for Architecture/Built Environment) (QS Ranking by Subject, 2022). POLIMI counts three main campuses in Milan and five campuses in Como, Lecco, Cremona, Mantua and Piacenza and one in Shanghai. POLIMI offers study programmes at all levels: 26 bachelor programmes, 43 master of science programmes, 19 Ph.D. programmes, specializing masters and postgraduate programmes) in Architecture, Design and Engineering, coordinated by 12 Departments. POLIMI offers two Master of Science Degree Programmes in Agricultural Engineering and Food Engineering, aimed to train a novel generation of engineers with a transdisciplinary set of skills and competences in the domain of agriculture and food.
Politecnico di Milano is committed to achieving excellence in research through the following actions: support advanced and fundamental research activities; develop strategic partnerships with academia and industry around the world to make significant contributions to society; develop new interdisciplinary research lines to tackle societal challenges; embed scientific developments and research results into university education. Politecnico di Milano annually attracts more than € 100 million through research contracts and external funding. The University is the 1st in Italy for projects funded by the European Commission. 281 projects were funded under FP7. Under the prestigious ERC Subprogramme, 34 Grants have been awarded as Host Institutions. So far, 60 projects, including 7 ERC and 6 MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships, worth more than €32 million have been funded under the 2021-2027 Horizon Europe Programme. With the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme (2014-2020), funds were granted to 437 projects for a total of over 189 million euros.
POLIMI fosters an interdisciplinary and holistic approach to face complex challenges affecting agri-food through interdisciplinary Master of Science, PhD programmes and research projects, also thanks to FOOD RING, a Transdisciplinary Unit that was introduced to contribute to the sustainability of agri-food systems through the contribution of 6 Departments. As a general trend since 2016 POLIMI allocated 9 million euros have been used for interdepartmental PhD grants. It also gathered different departments in the operation of 58 Joint Research Centres with companies.
POLIMI has built 6 Joint programs (doctoral schools, summer schools), 8 Joint initiatives, 5 Inter university working groups, 1 Awarded application –Innovative Training Networks, 4 Joint applications -Erasmus+ Cooperation through robust collaboration with universities worldwide. Through H2020 POLIMI is part of consortia involving 3.244 partners, involving prestigious academic partners. The University built strategic partnerships with institutions, particularly Ministries, Lombardy Regional Government, Municipality of Milan, Parco Agricolo Sud Milano, Parco del Ticino, Chambers of Commerce.
